Linear equation practice

Solve ax + b = c and ax + b = cx + d, with steps from the same code as the linear equation solver.

Practice session

What you practise

Every question asks for x. Watch the signs when you move a term to the other side: that is the slip the feedback looks for first. For the graph behind these equations, open the linear function simulation.

Example

Calculate x in 2x + 3 = 11.

  1. 2x = 11 − 3 = 8
  2. x = 8 ÷ 2 = 4

Answer: 4.

Formula sheet

Print-friendly: use Print in your browser.

  • Form ax+b=c
  • Solution (a ≠ 0) x=c−ba
  • Example 2x + 3 = 11 → x = 4 x=11−32=4
Equation (vergelijking)

A math sentence with = in which you look for an unknown, usually x.

Balance method (balansmethode)

Doing the same thing to both sides of the = so the equation stays balanced.

Frequently asked questions

What if a = 0?

Then there is no x left to solve for in ax + b = c. The solver rejects a = 0 for that reason.

Which calculator goes with this?

The linear equation solver shows the same steps.
