Statistics
What belongs here
Statistics summarizes a list of numbers: first the center (mean, median, mode), then the spread (standard deviation). On the Dutch site this topic is called Statistiek (statistics). Quartiles and the box plot are not separate tools here. Range is max − min, not its own page.
In which order do you build this?
- Mean: sum ÷ count, plus median and mode
- Standard deviation: how far from that mean
Start with the mean calculator: for 2, 5, 5, 8, 11 the sum is 31 and the mean is 6.2; the median is 5; the mode is 5. Without x̄ you cannot fill in σ. Then the standard deviation calculator: σ = √(Σ(x − x̄)² / n), or s with n − 1. That is not a second mean.
Which tool do you pick?
| You see in the sum… | Open |
|---|---|
| Center: middle, median, mode, “average” | Mean calculator |
| Spread: how far from the center, σ or s | Standard deviation calculator |
Unsure: center first, then spread. Shares of a group belong on the percentage calculator, not on σ.
What you meet per level
On this hub: which statistics tool fits center or spread. The current exam program is on Examenblad. Dutch secondary tracks are named once: vmbo, havo and vwo.
On vmbo this is a mark list: mean, middle value (median), what appears most often (mode), then “how far from the middle”. Range (highest minus lowest) is the short spread; σ asks the same question with the square root.
On havo you combine the two: first x̄, then σ dividing by n. For 2, 5, 5, 8, 11 you get σ ≈ 3.0594. Shares of a group belong on the percentage calculator, not on σ.
On vwo the same two tools, plus the choice n or n − 1. Sample s ≈ 3.4205 on the same list. With one number, s cannot be computed. We do not add a quartiles tool; Q2 is the median.
